Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 3 - 10.3 ZENworks Explorer
Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft Windows 2008 R2
Novell ZENworks 11 Configuration Management Support Pack 1 - ZCM 11 SP1 ZENworks Explorer
Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11.2 ZENworks Explorer

Situation

10.3.2 (and later) agent, and 11.1 agent:  Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 desktops display "ZENworks Adaptive Agent"

Resolution

For ZCM 11.x: This is fixed in version 11.2 - see KB 7010044 "ZENworks Configuration Management 11.2 - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support in 11.2, the icon is suppressed by default.

To show the icon (which is mandatory if folder redirection is being used, otherwise no ZCM icons are displayed on the desktop or Start Menu) it is necessary to create a DWORD
HKLM\Software\Novell\ZCM\NAL\SetIconOnDesktop and set the value to 1

Workaround: if it is not possible to upgrade to 11.1 at this time, in the interim, Novell has made a Patch available for testing, in the form of a Field Test File (FTF): it can be obtained at https://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=vMD1JCay4Fo~ as "ZCM 11.1/11.1a combined fix for "ZENworks Adaptive Agent" on desktop ? see KB 7007656, Bundles randomly disappear after ZCM 11.1 update - see KB 7009087 and Bundle verify fails with Reboot/Shutdown action - see TID 7009953". This Patch should only be applied if the symptoms above are being experienced, and are causing problems.

This Patch has had limited testing, and should not be used in a production system without first being checked in a test environment. Some Patches have specific requirements for deployment, it is very important to follow any instructions in the readme at the download site. Please report any problems encountered when using this Patch, by using the feedback link on this TID.  Note: with this update in place, to activate it, then in the registry of a managed device, it is necessary to create a DWORD
HKLM\Software\Novell\ZCM\NAL\SetIconOnDesktop and set the value to 0 - this automatically does the work shown in the workaround, and has the same limitation, i.e., it must not be used when Folder Redirection is used.

For ZCM 10: This is fixed in version 10.3.4 - see KB 7008244 "ZENworks Configuration Management 10.3.4 - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support

Workaround:
create a bundle to delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{763370C4-268E-4308-A60C-D8DA0342BE32}
and schedule this to run on device boot - ZENworks will recreate the registry key on bootup, so it is necessary to run this bundle every time.
NOTE: Deleting this registry key will mean that the fix for TID 7006271 Bundle shortcuts are not visible on Windows 7 when Folder Redirection is being used will not operate, so this workaround should not be used if Folder Redirection is being used

Additional Information

This icon is required as a necessary fix for the issue shown in TID 7006271 Bundle shortcuts are not visible on Windows 7 when Folder Redirection is being used

Double-clicking the icon displays the same view as can be seen in Windows Explorer if the "Display Applications in Windows Explorer" option is not set to "no" in a ZENworks Explorer Configuration policy - see https://www.novell.com/documentation/zcm10/zcm10_policies/data/bau5n68.html setting such a policy to "no" does not remove the icon, but the name of the icon can be changed by using the "Name of the root folder" setting
