Environment

PlateSpin Migrate and PlateSpin Protect used with Linux or ESX.

Situation

When attempting to discover/undiscover/delete/provide credentials for a conversion for a VMware ESX Server/VMware Infrastructure 3 target virtual host or Linux server, the following error appears:

Unable to use SSH session on [MACHINE], even though a connection was opened successfully.  Please verify that the [USER] has shell access enabled.

Resolution

Solution 1

The above error can occur if the user is attempting to discover a VMware ESX Server/VMware Infrastructure 3 target virtual host or a Linux Server with an account that has not been granted shell access.

To resolve this issue, please contact your VMware or Linux administrator and verify that the account has SHELL access as in this screenshot:

NOTE:  For VMware Infrastucture 3 - by default new accounts are created without SHELL access.

For full instructions on creating a new user account for Virtual Infrastructure, please read TID 7920795

 Solution 2

This error can also occur if trying to discover a Linux server using the DRAC or remote management interface. Use a network connection other than the remote management interface to discover the server.
