Environment

GWAVA (Secure Messaging Gateway)

Situation

Some inbound email is getting bounced back to the sender. The undeliverable message shows the reason as '500 Message denied access due to content filters in effect'. How can it be determined why these were blocked?

Resolution

The bounceback message of '500 Message denied access due to content filters in effect' means that this message fired on a filter that is set on the SMG policy. The best way to determine why a message was blocked is to look it up in message tracker. Here's how to do that:

1) Login to the SMG UI as admin or an admin user and choose Message Tracker.

2)  Select the date that the message was sent by clicking on the date range box on the top right.

3) Use the filter boxes to find the message. It's usually easiest to find by searching by the sender's email address. Multiple filters can also be used.

4) Once the message has been found, click on the subject and another small window will open.

5) If SMG is on an rev. older than rev.126, open 'Scan Engine Detail's and then look under 'Filters' to see which filters it fired on.

If SMG is on rev. 126 or newer there is no need to click on Scan engine details:

All messages will show 'message received' that is just a node used for stats and message tracking and can be ignored. The first example fired on SURBL, which is part of the Spam Filter Group and the second example fired on RBL, which is also part of the Spam Filter Group.

Now that it is known which filter it fired on, a whitelist entry can be made to allow it in next time. Here's a guide on how to create a whitelist entry.
