Environment

Micro Focus Filr 3.3

Situation

This update provides an updated fix for an issue previously addressed in the Filr 3.3.1 Update. The previous fix enabled host validation checks by default which caused a 404 Host Validation Failure Error for some Filr sites using multiple domains to access Filr. This update disables the host validation checks by default but allows the Filr administrator to enable them manually (see KB 7021148 for more details).

Resolution

Overview:
This update is intended to address the issues outlined in the following TIDs:
  1. TID 7021148 - Missing Validation checks in Filr HTTP Host headers
  2. TID 7022670 - Error 404 Host header validation failed after updating to Filr 3.3.1

System Requirements:
This update can be applied to a Filr site that is currently on any one of the following versions:

Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.3.1
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.3
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.2.2
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.2.1
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.2
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.1.1
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.1
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.0.0.149 (equivalent of Filr 3.0 - Security Update 1)
Micro Focus Filr Appliance version: 3.0.0.148

Important Notes:
  • Host validation must be enabled manually after applying this update, see TID 7021148 for more details.

  • This update is provided via the Filr Online Update channel accessible via the Filr Appliance Configuration console (port 9443).

  • This update is only required on the Filr appliance(s) in your deployment (Filr Search and Filr MySQL appliances are excluded). However, if you have multiple updates listed under the "Appliance config (9443) > Online Update > Needed Patches", you may need to update other appliances in your Filr deployment.

As a best practice, it is recommended to check the "Needed Patches" on all appliances before starting to apply the update(s).

  • If updating the Filr Search and Filr MySQL appliances, it is recommended to Stop Filr service (see how to stop Filr service) and update the Filr MySQL and Filr Search appliances first before starting the updates on the Filr appliance(s).

The Filr MySQL and Filr Search appliances MUST BE up and running when you start applying updates to the Filr appliance.

  • The updates may take up to 20 minutes to complete depending on the number of updates being applied. For example, if you are updating from Filr 3.0 all the way to 3.3.2 Update, it may take up to 20 minutes for the update progress bar to complete. We recommend that you wait for the progress bar to complete and not disrupt the update process.

Installation:
This update is provided via the Filr Online Update Channel.  Installation steps are provided for scenarios (A) and (B) depending on your current Filr version / patch-level.
  1. Login to the Filr Appliance Config (https://hostname:9443) as 'vaadmin' and select the Online Update icon.
  2. Toggle to the 'Needed Patches' in the patches download.
    a. If the only patch(es) listed are 'Filr 3.3.2 Update' and/or 'Filr 3.3.1 Update' , continue with 'Scenario A'.
    b. If multiple updates are listed, continue with 'Scenario B'.

Scenario A - Updating from Filr 3.3 or Filr 3.3.1 to Filr 3.3.2:
This scenario is applicable if the only available updates for your Filr deployment are 3.3.1 and/or 3.3.2.
  1. Click 'Update Now' button.
  2. In the 'Update Now' pop-up, select 'All Needed Patches' and select the two options:
    a. Automatically agree with all license agreements
    b. Automatically install all interactive patches
  3. Hit OK to apply the update.
  4. Toggle to the 'Installed Patches' in the patches download and verify the 'Filr 3.3.2 Update' patch update is shown as Installed.

Scenario B - Updating from Filr 3.2.2 (or older) to Filr 3.3.2:
This scenario is applicabe if multiple updates are available for your Filr deployment including Filr 3.3.2. A Reboot is required if one of the updates has Restart Required column set to Yes.
  1. Important: Stop the Filr service on all Filr nodes (see how to stop Filr service) and repeat Steps 2-6 in the following order: MySQL appliance first, then Search appliance(s) and Filr appliance(s) last. The Filr MySQL and Filr Search appliances MUST BE up and running when you start applying updates to the Filr appliance.

If you have a Small (all-in-one) Filr deployment, ignore this step and proceed to Step 2.
  2. Click 'Update Now' button.
  3. In the 'Update Now' pop-up, select 'All Needed Patches' and select the two options:
    a. Automatically agree with all license agreements
    b. Automatically install all interactive patches
  4. Hit OK to apply the updates.
  5. Toggle to the 'Installed Patches' in the patches download and verify all the updates are listed as installed.
  6. Reboot the appliance.

Known Issues:
  1. All updates are applied and listed under the 'Installed Patches' list but trying to access Filr results in Internal Error 500. What's wrong?

Internal Error 500 usually indicates there was a problem during the Filr service startup. This could happen for a variety of reasons, such as the MySQL or Search appliances being unavailable when Filr service was restarted. As a first step, shut down all appliances and start in this order: MySQL, Search, Filr. If the problem persists, please contact Micro Focus Customer Care.

  2. The update progress bar shows progress but patch update never completes.

This usually happens if the two options (a. Automatically agree with all license agreements and b. Automatically install all interactive patches) were not selected. To fix this problem, please cancel out of the update page and try installing the update again with the two options selected.

  3. It's been 20 minutes and the update progress bar is still spinning. Is it stuck?

As noted in the Important Notes above, it may take up to 20 minutes for all updates to be applied depending on how many updates need to be applied. We recommend that you wait for the progress bar to complete and not disrupt the update process for at least 30 minutes before contacting Micro Focus Customer Care. If you have cancelled out of the browser, and updates are no longer showing under 'Needed patches', chances are that the updates are still being applied in the background and the activity should be logged in the /var/log/zypp/history file.

  4. If configuring a new Filr 3.0 system for Online Updates for the first time using "SMT Server" or with a "Proxy Server", the registration may fail if the Filr server is in a private network.

To fix this problem, please consult TID 7020906 for Proxy configuration and/or TID 7018759 for SMT configuration.
