Situation

This technical note describes how to apply a service pack, update, or hotfix (hereinafter called patch file) to a workstation or administrative installation of Reflection Desktop 16, InfoConnect Desktop 16, Reflection 2014 or Reflection 2011 products.

Resolution

Applying a Patch File to a Workstation

Before applying a Reflection service pack or hotfix, note the following:

  • If you are installing on Windows XP, administrative rights may be required to install the patch.
  • You must have the appropriate Reflection version installed in order to apply the Reflection service pack or hotfix.

To apply a Reflection patch file to a workstation installation:

  1. Download the patch file.
  2. Close all running applications so that system files can be updated if needed.
  3. Locate the downloaded Reflection patch file and double-click the file. After the files needed to install the patch are extracted, you will be prompted to accept the software license agreement.
  4. After you accept the license agreement, the Micro Focus or Attachmate Reflection update dialog box opens:
  1. Select "Apply to the Local installation on this workstation," and then click Finish to apply the patch.

Applying a Patch File to an Administrative Installation

You must first apply the patch file to the administrative installation point. You can then upgrade or install Reflection on your user workstations (depending on whether or not Reflection was previously installed on the workstations).

Before applying a Reflection patch file, note the following:

  • If you are installing on Windows XP, administrative rights may be required to install the patch.
  • You must have access to the Reflection administrative installation point in order to apply the Reflection patch.
  • You must have the appropriate Reflection version installed in order to apply the Reflection patch.

To update the administrative installation:

  1. Download the patch file.
  2. Close all running applications so that system files can be updated if needed.
  3. Locate the downloaded Reflection patch file and double-click the file. After the files needed to install the patch are extracted, you will be prompted to accept the software license agreement.
  4. After you accept the license agreement, the Micro Focus Desktop 16 or Attachmate Reflection 2014 or 2011 update dialog box opens.
  5. Select "Apply to an Administrative installation on a server (browse to *.msi)." Browse to the administrative installation location and select the Reflection MSI Installer Package, and then click Finish to apply the patch.

To upgrade workstations from an administrative installation point:

After the patch file has been applied to the administrative installation, workstations can be upgraded to the newer version of Reflection. To upgrade Reflection workstations from the updated administrative installation, you must run the following command line parameter at each workstation:
msiexec /fvomus <path>\<MSI file name>

The <path> parameter must conform either to a UNC path or a mapped drive character shared by all workstations. <MSI file name> represents the specific MSI package for your product.

The example below uses a UNC path and the Reflection Desktop Pro 16.1 Installer Package:

msiexec /fvomus \\MyServer\MyPath\ReflectionProV16.1.msi

To install Reflection from an administrative installation point:

If the workstation has not had Reflection previously installed, you can install Reflection as you would a new installation by running Setup.exe from the administrative installation point or creating a shortcut.

For more information about deploying Reflection 2014 from an administrative installation point, see the Installation and Deployment Guide, https://docs.attachmate.com/reflection/2014/r1/deploy/.

For more information about deploying Reflection Desktop 16.1 from an administrative installation point, see https://www.attachmate.com/documentation/reflection-desktop-v16-1-sp1/deployment-guide/data/t_32946.htm.

Saving an *.msp File for Later Application

Alternatively, you can select "Save to a file (*.msp) for later application" in the Micro Focus or Attachmate Reflection dialog box if you want to save the file and construct your own msiexec command line (with /p option) to apply the patch.

For more information about installing an *.msp file, see KB 7021467.

For a list of Msiexec command line options, see the Microsoft (MSDN) Article https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa367988.aspx.
