Environment

Redline 3.5.1 build 1011 or higher

Situation

The purpose of this document is to provide step-by-step instructions for enabling Alert Escalation on Redline Alerts.

Resolution

Alert Escalation provides the administrator with a way to increase the severity of an alert over time.  With each MultiFire interval, Alert Escalation raises the severity of an alert one level.  For instance, if an agent is not responding, the first alert may be set to a very low severity, (Informational).  When the MultiFire interval is reached, the alert level will be raised to the next higher severity, (Minor).  This continues until Critical is reached.  If an alert reaches Critical severity it will remain there until resolved.  You may set the starting severity of an alert, but you cannot set the ceiling.

There are a couple of things to consider when utilizing Alert Escalation.  First, in order for Redline to raise severity, MultiFire needs to be enabled in addition to Alert EscalationMultiFire is needed to manage when it is time to raise the severity of an alert.  To do this, open the properties of any alert from Configure | Thresholds/Recommendations.
Alternatively, this can be done using the configure alert icon on the Alerts page.
Second, use caution when setting the initial severity for an alert with Alert Escalation enabled.  If the alert is set to escalate using a starting severity that is not enabled, the alert will never fire.  When setting Alert Escalation, ensure the starting severity for the alert is enabled under the Alert Generation page (Configure | Analyzer | Alert Generation).
This is a example of what can be expected using Multifire with Alert Escalation.  Here a server went down and the following email notifications were received.  Note the Alert: (#), Time, and Severity.
