Changing Message Size Limits and Throttling for Exchange

Environment

Retain 3.x Exchange Module

Situation

Users need to send attachments larger than the default through Exchange. There are many settings that need to be adjusted so that a message can move through the entire Exchange system properly. Note: These instructions are provided as a convenience. This is not required for proper Retain operation.

In Exchange you can set different limits depending on your system design.
Organizational Limits
Connector Limits
Server Limits
User Limits
These can be changed in the Exchange Admin Center (EAC) or via the Exchange Management Shell (EMS). This article will focus on the EAC. And the Organizational and Connector limits since those will effect all users.

Changing Organizational Limit:
Maximum size for messages received (default 10MB)
Mail flow > Receive connectors > More options More Options Icon > Organization transport settings > Limits tab > Maximum receive message size
Maximum size for messages sent (default 10MB)
Mail flow > Receive connectors > More options More Options Icon > Organization transport settings > Limits tab > Maximum send message size

Connector Limits:
Maximum message size through a Receive connector (default 35MB)
Mail flow >Receive connectors >EditEdit icon >General tab >Maximum receive message size
Maximum message size through a Send connector (default 10MB)
Mail flow >Send connectors >EditEdit icon >General tab >Maximum send message size
Changing Client-specific Limit:
On each CAS, you will also need to change the Exchange Web Services web.config files and the Outlook Web App web.config files as specified in Configure client-specific message size limits (MS technote).
