Patch installation fails: “Failed to install package through Web Services. Consider using direct update instead”

The installation of a patch fails.

Remark: patches can be downloaded from https://download.novell.com/patch/finder/ .

During the installation of a patch, it fails with the below error message:

Failed to install package through Web Service.  Consider using direct update instead.

 

1.  Before you end the installation go to the folder where the patch files have been extracted   Start> Run > Type %TEMP%.
2.  Back up the folder to your desktop and search for the JobxmlImport.xml file.
2.  Open up the JobxmlImport.xml file from the backed up folder and search for “DirectUpdate”.
3.  Modify the value from “false“ to “true“.
4.  Re-attempt patch installation.
