Situation

Creating an image of a UEFI based device

The following message is seen when creating the image:

Trying to make MBR based image from UEFI machine.

Resolution

There are two ways to solve this problem.
  1. If using the UEFI format is not important, modify the BIOS settings and select Legacy mode. This will then allow you to create the image.
  2. If the image is only intended for UEFI devices and using UEFI is desired, the following KB article from Microsoft shows the steps to changing the partition format to UEFI:


    This will wipe the drive so the OS will have to be reinstalled and sysprep will need to be done again before the image can be created.

Cause

MBR drive format only works with Legacy BIOS settings. It does not work with UEFI settings.
