Situation
Although ZENworks Imaging is supported with SSD (Solid State Drive) and other Advanced Format Drive (AFD) devices (see TID 7008796 "Support for Advanced Format Hard drives with ZENworks Imaging") , there can be a problem with drive alignment when restoring images.
Resolution
Note that the fixes shown below for May, are for Linux devices: the fix for Windows devices was part of the February 2012 update (but of course included in the May update).
When the fixes shown below have been applied, note that to assure alignment when restoring to Advanced Format and Solid State Drives, use the -A (this must be in upper-case) or --align switch, e.g.,
img -rp archive.zmg -A
img -rp archive.zmg --align
this is necessary when restoring Windows XP images: it is recommended for Windows 7 but not mandatory (with one exception: if a drive previously had Windows XP installed, and is "upgraded" to Windows 7, it will still have the old XP partition format, and in this case, the the -A parameter is mandatory).Note that using the GUI interface will not work for this switch, and see TID 7006411 Imaging switch to align harddrive does not work combined with parameter to stretch partition size for details of how to use the -A switch when performing selective restoration.
Do not use this parameter when restoring to non-AFD drives.
For ZCM 10.3.4: This is fixed in the ZENworks Imaging Update for May 2012 - see KB 7002402 "How to obtain the latest ZENworks Imaging Updates" found at https://www.novell.com/support for details of how to obtain this update.
Note that it is partially fixed in the shipping version 10.3.4 - see KB 7008244 "ZENworks Configuration Management 10.3.4 - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support
With version 10.3.4, images from new Windows 7 devices can be restored directly. Note that the Additional Information section below gives details of a -A parameter: this parameter is not present in 10.3.4, which means that in order to restore XP images, it is necessary to use the tools from the disk manufacturers to ensure that the drive is "aligned" before taking the image.
For ZCM 11.0: This is fixed in the ZENworks Imaging Update for May 2012 - see KB 7002402 "How to obtain the latest ZENworks Imaging Updates" found at https://www.novell.com/support for details of how to obtain this update.
For ZCM 11.1: This is fixed in the ZENworks Imaging Update for May 2012 - see KB 7002402 "How to obtain the latest ZENworks Imaging Updates" found at https://www.novell.com/support for details of how to obtain this update.
For ZCM 11.2: For Windows devices, this is part of the shipping code: for Linux devices, this is fixed in version 11.2.1 - see KB 7010042 "ZENworks Configuration Management 11.2.1 - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://support.microfocus.com/kb/doc.php?id=7010042
For ZLM 7.3 IR4: This is fixed in the ZENworks Imaging Update for May 2012 - see KB 7002402 "How to obtain the latest ZENworks Imaging Updates" found at https://www.novell.com/support for details of how to obtain this update.
