Cannot automatically upgrade older ZCM agents registered into fresh ZCM 11/11.1 zone

Novell ZENworks 11 Configuration Management
Novell ZENworks 11 Configuration Management Support Pack 1 - ZCM 11 SP1

Situation

  • Installed fresh ZCM 11/11.1 zone
  • Devices have older version of ZCM agent installed, registered to old zone
  • After unregistering from old zone, and registering to new zone, cannot apply System Update to upgrade agents

Resolution

  1. Ensure all devices to be upgraded meet the Minimum Requirements, as shown at https://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks11/zen11_installation/data/brm022x.html for ZCM 11.0, and https://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks11/zen11_installation/data/brm022x.html for 11.1. In particular, they must have Windows Installer 3.1 or newer, and .NET 3.5 SP1 (this is required, even if .NET 4.0 is already installed) - these are pre-requisites for the ZCM 11/11.1 Agent.
  2. If required, follow the instructions in TID 7008954 System Update immediately becomes baselined when imported to avoid the System Update immediately becoming baselined
  3. mount the ZENworks 11/11.1 DVD (or image) on the ZCM 11/11.1 Primary server
  4. Import the System Update using the zman command, which is documented at https://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks11/zen11_utils/data/b74pt40.html#bez3766 e.g.,
    Windows - zman sui [cd drive:]\common
    Linux - zman sui /media/ZENworks11SP1/Common

Additional Information

This process is only needed if this is a new ZCM 11/11.1 zone; it is not needed if the zone has been upgraded from an earlier version, since the System Update for the agents will already be available.
