Printer Driver Profiles cannot be created for OKI printers

Internet Explorer hangs, freezes, stops, halts

Situation

When creating a Printer Driver Profile in iManager, one of the following issues will occur, depending on the version of Internet Explorer:
  • Internet Explorer 6 and 7
    • Dialogue Box and Progress Bar appears:
      • iPrint Driver Profile Configuration
        Loading Driver Configuration
    • Device Options for the OKI Printer appears
    • Click OK
    • IE hangs and must be killed using Task Manager
  • Internet Explorer 8
    • Error:  Create Printer Driver Profile Failure
      Error occurred configuring driver.

Resolution

This is a problem with the OKI Driver.

Workaround:
  • Use the Universal driver provided by OKI
  • Use and alternative printer driver.  This means using either
    • use an older printer driver for that model printer
    • use a slightly different model printer driver
    • use a driver from a completely different manufacturer
      • many report the Xerox Global Driver works well with various vendor printers.

Additional Information

For the symptom seen with IE8, all of the recommendations in KB 7003840https://www.novell.com/support/search.do?searchString=7003840 - were tried and made no difference.

Rebuilding the printer driver using Printer Driver Generator from CoolSolutions - https://www.novell.com/communities/node/350 - was tried and made no difference.
