Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 3 - 10.3

Situation

Since 10.3 update, ZCM agent login is slow when client is unable to contact the server on ZENworks 10.3 managed agents or workstation only login.

Resolution

This is fixed in version 10.3.1 - see KB 7006265 "ZENworks Configuration Management 10.3.1 - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support

Workarounds:

  1. Reducing the number of servers a client contacts will reduce the timeout.
The closest server rules (including the default if not explicitly unchecked) can impact the time if there are multiple servers in the list failing to respond.
Use closest server explicit rules in a more targeted manner.  Remove servers that should really not be used in any case.  Ensure some failover, but not to remote satellites for example.
  2. Note the existing values in the following to restore if necessary.  These can be set at zone, device folder or individual device:
    Device Management > ZENworks Agent
Times to retry requests to a busy server:
Initial retry request wait (each subsequent request incremented by 1 second):
    Maximum retry request wait:
These can be modified to reduce the retries which should help speed up the login.  However they should not be set so low that agents on the network timeout too soon.   Devices need to refresh for the changes to apply.
  3. To bypass ZEN login with nwclient, see TID 7000753 at https://support.microfocus.com/kb/doc.php?id=7000753
  4. To bypass ZEN login on per device/per login basis, hold down the Shift key while logging in.
