Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 2 - 10.2

Situation

-Hostname of XP workstation is set to more than 15 characters.
-The managed device shows up in ZCC with the full name.
-When attempting to remote control, the device is shown with the full hostname.
-Remote Session fails with error: Failed to connect to server (<DN of host>)

Resolution

This is fixed in version 10.3.2 - see KB 7007237 "ZENworks Configuration Management 10.3.2 - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support

WORKAROUND:  use IP address for remote control, or change workstation names to conform to the NETBIOS maximum of 15 characters.

Additional Information

When configuring a workstation name longer than 15 characters, Windows will prompt that NETBIOS names can only be 15 chars long and that the name will be truncated.  The name displayed is the long name, but when trying to resolve the device, the truncated version of the name must be used.

assume workstation with name: abcdefghijklmnop (16 chars)
trying to ping: abcdefghijklmnop would fail, even though it is the correct name of the device.
trying to ping: abcdefghijklmno would succeed, because the name has been truncated
