Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 1 - 10.1 Remote Management

Situation

Selecting the device by name in the remote management drop down in the ZCC causes error:

ERROR:  "Failed to connect to server "

Using the IP address works correctly.

Resolution

Be sure that the device is resolvable by the fully qualified domain name.  Although the drop down only contains the short name of the device, the FQDN is used to connect.

If DNS is not set up to resolve FQDN of devices, use the Remote Management Dialog dropdown box to select IP address instead of device name.

Additional Information

Try to ping the FQDN of agent from the machine where the ZCC in browser is opened.

The "server" in the error message indicates the Remote Management server (i.e. agent ) not ZCM server.

To determine the FQDN being used:

  1. Try to Remote Control the agent machine using the host name.
  2. After Launching the RM attempt, open the source of the browser page (right click on the page and select view source)
  3. Search for "cmdline" in the source.
  4. You should see the FQDN of the machine to which you are Remote Controlling in the same line as a "cmdline" as a command line option.
