Answer
Support recommends to install the SmartConnector as a service because it has service priority, If you don't run as a service, then agent.out.wrapper.log is not generated - Also since standalone doesn't use agent.wrapper.conf then you run the risk of the new java issue with loggers and TLS bringing down the apache on the logger, that file is generated during service creation and has the exclusion for the TLS issue.
As a side note Standalone service is only recommended for testing purposes.
