This document is an overview of
the changes made to the HP Network
Node Manager iSPI Performance for Metrics Software (NNM
iSPI
Performance for Metrics).
It contains important information
that is not included in books or Help. You can find information about
the following in this document:
The HP
Network Node Manager iSPI Performance for Metrics
Software 10.00 media provides
the following software programs:
Network
Performance Server (NPS):
NPS provides the infrastructure to analyze the performance
characteristics of your network. With the performance data collected by
the HP Network Node Manager i Software Smart Plug-ins (iSPIs), NPS
builds data tables, runs queries in response to user selections, and
displays query results in web-based reports that enable you to diagnose
and troubleshoot problems in your network environment.
HP
Network Node Manager iSPI Performance for Metricssoftware
(NNM iSPI Performance for
Metrics):
The NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics provides the core performance
management capability to NNMi by gathering and monitoring the metric
data polled by NNMi from different network elements. The combination of
NNMi and NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics enables you to monitor the
operational performance of your network infrastructure.
The NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics also provides you with sets of
embedded dashboard screens and predefined reports in the form of
Extension Packs to analyze the
performance data polled by NNMi.
The NNM iSPI Performance for
Metrics contains new features, feature
enhancements, and other changes.
Product
features and architecture
Distributed
deployment model: You can
deploy NPS
on multiple different servers and assign specific roles to each server.
The distributed deployment model enables you to achieve greater
performance, which leads to greater scalability, faster and more
predictable data processing
and report building. For more information, see the NNM
iSPI
Performance for Metrics Installation Guide
and the NNMi
iSPI
Performance for Metrics Deployment Reference. To obtain a copy
of the most current version of this guide, go to http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/document/KM00940852/binary/nnm_ispi_Metrics_Deployment_10.00.pdf. NOTE: Using an NFS share with the distributed deployment of NPS is not supported. While creating a distributed deployment of NPS, you must always select the CIFS share while running the nnmenableperfspi.ovpl script.
Cross-domain
extension pack: When you
install an
iSPI, NPS creates a cross-domain extension pack that enables you to
build reports with key metrics and topology attributes from all
Extension Packs installed on the NPS system. Three new
Quicklaunch Report Views are
provided to help you start using the
cross-domain Extension Pack. For more information, see the
Using
the Cross-Domain Extension Pack
topic in NNM iSPI Performance
for Metrics Online Help.
Performance
inventory views: This
version of the
NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics adds new inventory views to the NNMi
console. These new inventory views (Node Performance Metrics and
Interface Performance Metrics) enable you to view the performance
metrics collected by NNMi from the nodes and interface on which you
have enabled performance monitoring. For more information, see the Performance
Analysis with Additional Views
topic in NNMi Online Help.
Performance dashboards:
New dashboards with domain specific performance information,
interactive charts, graphs and dynamic drilldown are now included
within the NNMi console. These offer direct access to the most relevant
performance data in a single window.
Performance
workbench enhancements: The
usability of the
performance
workbench has been enhanced greatly. In particular, a save option is
now included - allowing users to create their own favorite sets of
measures and save those for future use.
Enhanced
Self Diagnostic Extension Pack:
The
Self Diagnostic extension pack now provides a new metric (Process Time)
and a new Baseline Sleeve report to help you monitor how much time NPS
takes to complete a task. For more information, see the Monitor
the Health of NPS and Extension Packs
topic in NNM iSPI
Performance for Metrics Online Help.
Faster
reports: This release of
NPS includes
enhancements to the structure of reports which reduces the time
required to launch.
Scheduled outage support:
Enhanced support for historical outage tracking, including the ability
to retroactively adjust reporting data after an outage has occurred.
SUSE Support: NPS now installs and operates
on SUSE Linux
Enterprise Server 11 SP3.
New metrics and topology attributes:
The following
metrics are introduced in this release (for all Extension Packs):

which is available on the installation media.
To use the interactive guide
available on the product media, launch
the interactive_install_guide_en.htm
file with a web
browser.
Alternatively, you can download
the interactive_installation_guide_en.zip
file from the
HP Software Product Manuals
web site.
To use the downloaded interactive_installation_guide_en.zip
file,
follow these steps:
Place the interactive_installation_guide_en.zip
file into a local directory.
Extract the contents of the interactive_installation_guide_en.zip
file.
Launch the interactive_install_guide_en.htm
file
(available in the directory where you extracted the contents of the interactive_installation_guide_en.zip
file).
Browser Locale
This release of the NNM iSPI
Performance for Metrics is available
only in English. If a non-English browser is used to access the system,
some contents may be displayed in the browser locale. To
ensure
that NPS console displays output only in English regardless of browser
locale settings, run the manageLocaleSupport.ovpl
command.
Log on to the NPS system as
root or administrator and go to the
command prompt.
It is strongly recommended that you take a complete backup of the NPS data before you begin upgrading to the version 10.00.
Run the following command to take a complete backup of NPS: backup.ovpl -b<backup_dir>
In this instance, <backup_dir> is the directory where the command places the backed-up file.
Upgrading NPS 9.2x or 9.1x installed on Red Hat Linux 5.x to the version 10.00 involves:
Installing a new instance of NPS 10.00 on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 system
Restoring the backed-up NPS 9.20 or 9.10 data on the new NPS 10.00 installation
Before performing this restore operation, make sure to apply the hotfix QCCR1B128060. To obtain the hotfix, contact HP Support.
If you had created customized reports with Query Studio before upgrading to version 10.00, you must follow these steps after upgrade:
Log on to the NPS console.
Click BI Server > Public Folders.
In the Public Folders tab, click All ExtensionPacks, and then click More.. at right hand side.
Click Set Properties, and then click Link to Package.
Select the Extension Pack for which the custom report was created.
Click OK.
If you do not complete this procedure, the following error message appears when you try to launch the custom report:
Failure UT-DEF-0096 Unable to find the CreateRelation member.
After upgrading NPS to the
version 10.00 (when NPS is installed on a dedicated server and not on the NNMi management server), do not start any NPS
processes until all other iSPIs are upgraded to the version 10.00.
After all iSPIs are upgraded to the version 10.00, start the NPS
processes by running the following command:
This release contains certain
unresolved problems, some
limitations, and there are workaround to help solve certain problems.
Installation
Installations on Windows require a Microsoft MFC Security Update, which may not exist on the system. If this package is missing on the system, the installer will fail at the point where it tries to install Sybase IQ. Workaround: Uninstall the product by running the installer again and following the uninstall steps. Load the Microsoft patch found here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26347, and then attempt the NPS installation again.
Following an upgrade, some table index types may not be correct. Workaround:Run the dbCheckIndexes.ovpl command to check the status of all database table indexes on the system and use the -r option to rebuild non-compliant table indexes.
Performance Graphing
If you launch the Performance Graphing window for more than
three
incidents simultaneously, the graphs may not appear correctly. Do not
launch multiple Performance Graphing windows together.
If the HP Operations agent is installed on the NNMi
management server, you may experience difficulties with launching the
Performance Graphing window.
If you launch the Performance Graphing window after selecting
multiple interfaces from the same node, some metrics may
be
repeated multiple times or be inaccurate. Workaround: Always select one
interface at a time while launching the Performance Graphing window.
There are some other minor usability issues with the
Performance Graphing window. These include titles not being displayed
correctly when launching favorites and reloading charts not working as
expected when launching from favorites.
Performance graphs cease to appear in the Analysis pane and on dashboards after configuring NPS to use a non-default communication port. Workaround: Restart the NPS processes by running the following command on the NPS system: stopALL.ovpl
startALL.ovpl
NPS
Reports
and Their Use
Reports do not open in a GNM environment
In a GNM environment where each regional manager is configured with an NPS and the global manager
is also configured with a dedicated NPS instance, the following error message may appear when you try
to launch a report:
DPR-ERR-2107 The user capabilities cookies can not be decoded
You are likely to see this error message when you do the following:
Log on to the NPS console associated with the global manager.
Log on to the NNMi console of one of the regional managers.
Launch the NPS console from this regional NNMi console.
Launch one of the reports in the NPS console.
This error appears when the Regional Manager and Global Manager are in different domains.
Workaround:
Follow these steps on all NPS systems available in the GNM environment (In a distributed deployment of NPS, do this only on the UiBi Server):
Log on to the NPS system as root or administrator.
Run the following command: On Windows %NPSInstallDir%\bin\runBIConfigGui.ovpl On Linux /opt/OV/NNMPerformanceSPI/bin/runBIConfigGui.ovpl
In the HP NNM iSPI Performance BI Configuration window, click Actions > Edit Global
Configuration.
In the Global Configuration dialog box, specify:
Domain: specify the FQDN of the NPS system (or the FQDN of the UiBi Server in a distributed
deployment of NPS).
Path: specify /.
Secure flag enabled: Select yes.
Click OK.
Restart the BI Server by running the following commands:
stopBI.ovpl
startBI.ovpl
On a non-English system, some NPS menu items appear in English. Workaround: Follow these steps before launching any reports:
In the NPS console, click BI Server > Portal. The Public Folders - NNM iSPI Performance BI Portal page opens.
On the top of the page, click My Area Options > My Preferences. The Set Preferences page opens.
In the General tab, under Regional Options > Product Language, select the correct language (the language that was chosen during NPS installation).
In the General tab, under Regional Options > Content Language, select the correct language (the language that was chosen during NPS installation).
Click OK.
Also, make sure that your browser's preference setting includes the correct language.
When launching Report
Views, the pre-saved topology filter
for the Report View may not be passed into the Topology Selection page.
Workaround: Use the topology selector page to select the required
topology filter again.
After creating a Report View, you cannot modify and save the same Report View with different topology filters or time settings.
Custom collections can
include a set of reports within NPS. A
'Threshold Sleeve' report can sometimes be generated for the custom
collection, despite there being no data to populate it. The result is
an error to the screen when a user attempts to run this report.
Workaround: The reports administrator should use the BI server
administration screens to remove the Threshold Sleeve report with the
error associated with the custom collection.
You can launch and view reports after logging on to the NNMi console as an administrator, operator, or guest. If you plan to log off, log on to the NNMi console again as a different user, and then launch reports again, you must clear browser cookies.
The 'Overall Days to
Threshold' report may show very large,
potentially negative, numbers in some circumstances. This indicates it
has been a long time since the threshold was breached, or until it will
be breached. The value displayed is correct, but may appear confusing
to users.
You may experience minor issues while using Internet Explorer 10 in the standard mode (for example, drilling through from one report to another may not work correctly or the BI Server portal may not appear correctly). Workaround: Use Internet Explorer 10 in the compatibility mode or use a different browser.
NNMi
Dashboards
Users
with more than 100
security groups created in their system may experience difficulties
with their dashboards. Workaround: Contact support for the latest patch.
Managed
Inventory Reports
In a large
environment, the Managed Inventory report takes a long time to show
content . This is particularly noticeable when you launch the Managed
Inventory report from the cross-domain Extension Pack.
Product
Maintenance
Restoring the data backed-up on an older version of NPS fails. To resolve this issue, apply the hotfix QCCR1B128060 and perform the restore operation again. To obtain the hotfix, contact HP Support.
The
'Reinstall from media' installation option is not supported and may
fail with an error if it is initiated. Users wishing to reinstall a
system should uninstall the product first and then perform a fresh
installation.
If restoring a
backup taken from a different system, it is important to ensure that
the database directory structure is equivalent between the original and
the target machine, otherwise the restoration may fail.
Upgrading
NPS
on a Windows platform from version 9.10 includes a required step to
back up the reporting content store. This step may fail for systems
with
a large content store. Workaround: The user should attempt the backup
at least twice and if it continues to fail then contact support for
patch information or a workaround.
In a
Windows
large scale environment the Sybase database has been known to abort
when under heavy workload. This situation has been seen rarely and does
not cause any loss of data. Workaround: NPS can be configured to
automatically restart the database if it is not
operating. Update
the value of the PRSPI_RESTART_DB property from 0 to 1 in the
%NPSDATADIR%/rconfig/NNMPerformanceSPI.cfg file.
(Do not modify any other properties in this file.)
Save the file and
restart the ETL processes by running the following commands:
stopALL.ovpl
startALL.ovpl
In some
circumstances, a user who runs the nnmenableperfspi.ovpl routine can
inadvertently turn on performance collections
or add report launch actions to their NNMi menu systems
without having NPS installed. This will result in
non-functioning
launch actions and some unnecessary performance collections being
executed. Workaround: If NPS is not installed then remove the
non-functioning actions from the NNM menu system or run
nnmdisableperfspi.ovpl to remove the actions and stop the collections.
When upgrading a system which is operating in high availability and is the 'passive' node, the steps which enable actions and shared directories may fail. Workaround: The node should be configured back into the active state and the nnmenableperfspi.ovpl routine executed again manually.
The following error messages appear in the command line console when you run the startBI.ovpl or startALL.ovpl command:
WARN: Failed command system(./cogconfig.sh -java:local -s > "/var/opt/OV/NNMPerformanceSPI/logs/startBIServices.log" 2>&1): 512
BI Server - initializing
ERROR: Problems starting the BI Services.

FATAL: Failed starting the HP NNM iSPI Performance BI Service.
Died at /opt/OV/nonOV/perl/a/lib/5.8.8/NPS/npslog.pm line 194, line 3.
This error may appear if a large number of Extension Packs are installed on the NPS system. Workaround: To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Log on to the NPS system as root or administrator.
Go to the following directory: Windows:%npsinstalldir%\..\nonOV\cognos\bi\configuration Linux:/opt/OV/../nonOV/cognos/bi/configuration
Open the cogconfig.prefs file with a text editor.
Add the following lines: ServiceMaxTries=1200
ServiceWaitInterval=2400
Save the file.
Run the following commands:
stopBI.ovpl
startBI.ovpl
Others
In an environment where both NNMi and NPS are installed on the same server, NPS stops working after installing the HP Business Service Manager Connector (BSM Connector) 10.00 on the NNMi management server. Workaround: Move NPS to a standalone, dedicated server (different from the NNMi management server), and then install the BSM Connector on the NNMi management server. Do not install the BSM Connector
on a system where NPS is installed.
In the Interactive Installation Guide, the installation log file directory is documented as HPNNMPerformanceSPI_10.00.000 and the installation log file name is documented as HPNNMPerformanceSPI_10.00.000_<timestamp>_HPOvInstallerLog.html.
The correct installation log file directory is HPNNMPerformanceSPI_10.00.001 and the correct log file name is HPNNMPerformanceSPI_10.00.001_<timestamp>_HPOvInstallerLog.html.
