This document provides an overview of the HP OpenView Smart Plug-in for Microsoft Virtual Server (MSVS SPI) software version B.01.00.

The MSVS SPI integrates fully with HP OpenView Operations for Windows (OVO). The SPI extends the management scope of OVO to include the virtual computer environment of Microsoft Virtual Server.

The features provided by the MSVS SPI are detailed below:

Installation Notes

Installation requirements, as well as instructions for installing the MSVS SPI are documented in Smart Plug-ins CD for OpenView Operations Installation/Upgrade Guide provided in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format.

Before installing the MSVS SPI, make sure that your system meets the following requirements. For the management server requirements, refer to the OVO version 7.5 requirements.

Software

MSVS SPI Reporter on a Microsoft Cluster with HP OpenView Reporter 3.6 and no OVO Installation

You must install the MSVS SPI Reporter only on the cluster node where the OV Reporter 3.6 resource group is active.

To uninstall MSVS SPI Reporter, you must make sure that you uninstall MSVS SPI Reporter from the same cluster node on which you installed it. In addition, you must make sure that the OV Reporter 3.6 resource group is active on the cluster node during uninstallation.

Uninstalling MSVS SPI

You must perform the following steps to uninstall MSVS SPI:

To remove MSVS SPI policies from managed nodes:

  1. In the OVO console, locate the following:
    Nodes > <node name>
  2. Right click and view the policy inventory by using the following option in the menu:
    View > Policy Inventory

  3. Select and right click the MSVS SPI policies, and remove them from the node by using the following option in the menu:
    All tasks > Remove from node

To remove the MSVS SPI components and software:

  1. In the OVO console tree, locate the following:
    Tools > SPI for MS Virtual Servers > Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 > Maintenance
  2. Run the Host Agents Uninstall tool to uninstall the HP host agent.
  3. Run the Data Source Remove tool to remove the data source created by MSVS SPI.
  4. Run the SPI CD common installer to uninstall the MSVS SPI. Refer to the Smart Plug-ins CD for OpenView Operations Installation/Upgrade Guide for information on how to uninstall the SPI using the SPI CD common installer.

Known Problems, Limitations, and Workarounds

Installation of HP MSVS2005 Host Agents might fail

The installation of HP MSVS2005 Host Agents application might fail due to insufficient permissions to install the application when you run the following tools or policy:

You must run these tools or policy as a user with permissions to install or uninstall applications.

To change the user for a tool:

  1. From the OVO console, right-click the Host Agent Install or Host Agent Uninstall tool and select Properties. The Tool Properties dialog box is displayed.
  2. Select the Target tab from the Tool Properties dialog box
  3. Clear the Run as Agent User check box. The User Name text box is enabled
  4. Type the <user name> in the User Name text box. The Password text box is enabled
  5. Type the <password> in the Password text box. The Verify Password text box is enabled
  6. Type the <password> for confirmation in the Verify Password text box
  7. Click OK. This completes the procedure to change the user for a tool

To change user for a policy:

  1. From the OVO console, double-click the MSVSSPI-HP Host Agent Install policy. The MSVSSPI-HP Host Agent Install dialog box is displayed.
  2. Select the Task tab
  3. Select the As user check box. The As user text box is enabled
  4. Type the <user name> in the As user text box
  5. Select the Specify password check box. The Specify password text box is enabled.
  6. Type the <password> in the Specify password text box
  7. Click Save and Close
  8. From the OVO console, right-click MSVSSPI-HP Host Agent Install policy and select All Tasks > Deploy on.... The Deploy policies on... dialog box is displayed
  9. Select the required host nodes from the dialog box and click OK. This completes the procedure to change the user for a policy

Verified Environments

MSVS SPI version B.01.00 supports only OVO 7.5. Earlier versions of OVO are not supported.
