Chapter 1: In This Version

Enhancements to the Active Directory SPI include the following:

  1. Additional services/components in display: Views of your Active Directory forests, preferred bridgehead servers, and SYSVOL status in the OV Operations service map.
  2. Live hyperlinks to Microsoft Knowledge Base articles within the policies’ Instruction Text (just click the Instruction Text tab to view).  The Instruction Text associated with this message (accessible by clicking the Instruction Text tab) would include possible causes of the problem, the potential impact of the problem, and suggested actions an administrator can take to resolve the issue. Toward the end of the Instruction Text, you will see the link(s) to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article(s).
  3. GPO and Sysvol Monitoring:
Policies to monitor file replication service (FRS) issues.
Policies to monitor GPO synchronization in Active Directory and Sysvol.
  4. Performance enhancements to the DNS monitoring policies.
  5. Trust monitoring that includes new policies, reports, and a tool. The tool is available for display of domain controller trust relationships..
Policies to determine and store trust health: The user will be notified if there is a change in the trust relationship/status upon addition/deletion of a trust. These trust changes will be stored on the agent and the data will be used by the trust history report.

NOTE: Trust monitoring policies work only on Windows 2003 domain controllers (through the new WMI provider), while the tools can work on both Windows 2000/2003 domain controllers.

Domain and Forest Trust Changes Report:
The report shows data for Windows 2003 domain controllers only. Trust data will be collected from all the Windows 2003 domain controllers and displayed in a report grouped by System Name.
The report shows the following information:
    - Type of change - addition, deletion/modification of a trust
    - Trusted Domain Name
    - Trusting Domain Name
    - Trust Attributes
    - Trust Direction - Inbound, Outbound or Bi-directional
    - Trust Status - Status string
    - Trust Type - Downlevel, Uplevel, Non-windows or DCE -
A tool can be used to display the trust relationships on a domain controller. This tool works for both Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 domain controllers, listing all trust relationships and the domain controller attributes.
  6. DCDemotion tool: This tool is used to remove objects placed into the directory for tracking replication latency.  It is used before a DC is demoted so the user will not receive replication latency times regarding machines that are no longer domain controllers.

Chapter 2: Installation Notes

Installation requirements, as well as instructions for installing the Active Directory SPI, are documented in the HP OpenView Smart Plug-in for Microsoft Active Directory Configuration Guide provided in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. The document file is included on the product's CD media in the \Documentation\SPI Guides\ directory\ActiveDirectory_Config.pdf.

Upgrade note: No special actions are required. During the installation, using the Smart Plug-ins, New and Upgraded CD, Volume 1, the previous SPI version is detected and the installation proceeds as expected. If however, you want to preserve any policy customizations made in the previous version, a procedure in Chaper 2 of the Smart Plug-in for Active Directory Configuration Guideshows you how to do that.

Post-uninstall note: After you uninstall Active Directory programs, policies, and tools, you will need to manually delete the SPI for Active Directory subfolder under the console's "Tools" folder (see the Smart Plug-in for Active Directory Configuration Guide for details).
