Service Asset and Configuration Management (SACM) is an integrated solution that brings together HP offerings for AM, SM, UCMDB and Connect-It. The following products participate in the HP Service Asset and Configuration Management (SACM) Solution:
HP Asset Manager (AM) version 9.40
HP Service Manager (SM) version 9.32
HP Universal Configuration Management Database (UCMDB) version 10.10
The HP Service Asset and Configuration Management Solution is described in the Solution Concept Guide and the Solution Configuration Guide.
The HP Service Asset and Configuration Management (SACM) Solution lays the data foundation that enables IT to derive cost, IT policy compliance, and operational information required for IT to make intelligent sourcing decisions.
SACM was first introduced in ITIL version 3 when Configuration Management became Service Asset and Configuration Management in support of a services-led IT philosophy and methodology. ITIL defines SACM as a process that manages the service assets in support of the other service management processes. According to ITIL, SACM’s objective is to define and control the components of services and infrastructure, and maintain accurate configuration information on the historical, planned, and current state of the services and infrastructure.
The HP SACM Solution enables the IT organization to tightly link the activities and investments of IT Asset Management and Configuration Management, accurately record and track the various costs associated with delivering IT services, and maintain an accurate picture of the organization’s IT infrastructure used throughout the IT service management processes.
This guide explains the motivation to install and use the SACM Solution. It describes what the solution implementation will achieve, which Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) processes it will answer, and describes the workflow between the products comprising the solution.
For an overview of the SACM Solution, see the HP SACM Solution Concept Guide.

Many key IT (ITIL) processes rely on SACM being in place in the organization; including all of the following:
By enabling and supporting these processes, SACM contributes to:
Financial traceability—the ability to understand where the IT budget is being spent and in support of which business drivers
This also supports better financial decision making in general and specifically determining if the IT budget is truly supporting the important business services that drive the company’s revenue stream.
SACM provides these values to the business throughout the entire service life cycle, from request through procurement to deployment into the IT environment, management of the service in production, and ending at the retirement and disposal phases. SACM is responsible for creating and managing the Configuration Management System (CMS) and as such provides IT organizations with more control over their IT environments, better adherence to the policies it defines, and greater accessibility to the necessary information. SACM does so by delivering the following:
