About QuickTest Professional Essentials

QuickTest Professional Essentials is identical to QuickTest Professional with the following exceptions:

  • Add-in Environments: QuickTest Professional Essentials provides support only for the following add-in environments:

    • ActiveX
    • Java
    • Visual Basic
    • Web
    • .NET
    • WPF
    • Silverlight
    • Web 2.0 Toolkit Support

  • These environments are installed by default when you install QuickTest Professional Essentials (except for Web 2.0 Toolkit Support).

You load support for these add-in environments using the Add-in Manager dialog box. For details, see the HP QuickTest Professional Add-ins Guide.

Note: Add-in extensibility support is also available for these environments (except for ActiveX and Visual Basic). Additionally, Extensibility Accelerator is available in QuickTest Professional Essentials from Tools > Extensibility Accelerator.

  • Quality Center/HP ALM integration: QuickTest Professional Essentials integrates with HP Quality Center Starter Edition, versions 10.00 and later. (From the QuickTest main window, select File > ALM/QC Connection, or click the ALM/QC Connection button in the Standard toolbar to connect to a project.)
  • License types: QuickTest Professional Essentials can be used with the following license types:
    • Seat. A license that is issued for a specific computer. If you install a seat license prior to the 30-day demo license expiry date, the seat license takes effect only after the demo license expires.
    • Concurrent. A license for each concurrent user within an organization. If you install a concurrent license, the concurrent license takes effect immediately and overrides the demo or seat license.
    • Demo (HP Unified Functional Testing Demo license). A 30-day trial license for full use of QuickTest Professional (including all add-ins, if installed). After that time, you must install a QTP Essentials license to continue working with QuickTest Professional Essentials, or you can upgrade to the full version of QuickTest Professional. For details, see Changing the license, below.
    • For details on installing and working with these license types, see the HP QuickTest Professional Installation Guide.

  • Changing the license: You can switch between QuickTest Professional Essentials and the full version of QuickTest Professional, as follows:
    1. In QuickTest Professional Essentials or QuickTest Professional, select Help > About QuickTest Professional.
    2. In the dialog box that opens, click License. The QuickTest Professional - License Summary dialog box opens.
    3. Select or clear the Work with QuickTest Essentials check box.
When the check box is selected, the QTP Essentials license is used, enabling you to work with QuickTest Professional Essentials.
When the check box is cleared, a different license must be installed to use QuickTest Professional.

Caution: If the QTP Essentials license is the only QuickTest-related license available, then this check box must be selected before the Demo license expires and must remain selected thereafter. Otherwise, QuickTest Professional Essentials will not be available after the Demo license expires.

Note: You must install a full license to work with QuickTest Professional. If you upgrade from QuickTest Professional Essentials to the full version of QuickTest Professional, make sure to review QuickTestProfessional_Readme.htm for important information. The readme is located in the <QuickTest installation folder>\help folder (for example: C:\Program Files\HP\QuickTest Professional\help).

  • Working with Object Repositories: If you are integrating with Quality Center/HP ALM, make sure that QuickTest Professional Essentials is connected to a Quality Center or HP ALM project before you try to access or save an object repository in the Object Repository Manager.

Getting Started

Important installation information and step-by-step installation instructions can be found in the HP QuickTest Professional Installation Guide. The Installation Guide is available in PDF format in the root folder of the QuickTest Professional Essentials DVD. You can also open it from the Documentation Library Home page of the QuickTest Professional Help after you install QuickTest Professional Essentials. (The Installation Guide is identical for QuickTest Professional and QuickTest Professional Essentials.)

After you install, you may want to refer to the following items, available from the QuickTest Help menu.

  • What's New. Provides details about new features and new environment support.
  • QuickTest Professional Tutorial. If you are using QuickTest Professional Essentials for the first time, use the QuickTest Professional Tutorial to learn how to work with several of the most commonly used features.
  • QuickTest Professional Documentation Library. A single-point of access for comprehensive product information, including installation guides, user guides, and language references in Help and/or PDF format. The Using this Documentation Library section describes how to navigate, use, and get updates for the QuickTest Professional Documentation Library.

Hotfix and Patch Information

If you install a hotfix or patch over QuickTest Professional Essentials 11.00, information about that patch is described in the corresponding hotfix or patch readme.

If the information in a hotfix or patch readme conflicts with information in the QuickTest Professional Essentials Readme or any other QuickTest documentation, the information in the hotfix or patch readme takes precedence.

To view the QuickTest Professional Essentials hotfix and patches installed on your computer, open QuickTest Professional Essentials, select Help > About QuickTest Professional and click the Product Information button. Installed hotfixes and patches are listed at the bottom of the Product Information page. Click the link to open the readme file for the hotfix or patch.

HP QuickTest Asset Upgrade Tool for HP ALM/Quality Center

If you work with HP Quality Center Starter Edition and have existing QuickTest assets, your Quality Center or HP ALM administrator should update all your existing QuickTest assets using the HP QuickTest Asset Upgrade Tool for HP ALM/Quality Center.

The HP QuickTest Asset Upgrade Tool for HP ALM/Quality Center enables a Quality Center or HP ALM administrator to simultaneously upgrade all of the QuickTest assets stored in a HP Quality Center Starter Edition project from an earlier QuickTest version to QuickTest 11.00 format (which is compatible with QuickTest Professional Essentials).

In addition to upgrading all QuickTest assets to the current version, the tool also:

  • Converts testing resources older than 10.00 from attachments to linked entities that use the resources and dependencies model.
  • Stores data tables associated with each test as resource files, which enables you to work with data awareness capabilities in HP ALM.

The HP QuickTest Asset Upgrade Tool for HP ALM/Quality Center, and its corresponding documentation, is available for download from: http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/document/KM910435

Notes and Limitations

This section includes the following:

  • Before You Install
  • Using the Documentation

Before You Install

This section includes information that is important for you to know before you install QuickTest Professional Essentials.

  • If QuickTest Professional is already installed on the computer on which you are installing QuickTest Professional Essentials, you must uninstall QuickTest before you install QuickTest Professional Essentials.
  • QuickTest Professional Essentials supports the Sentinel RMS License Manager version 8.3.0 as its concurrent license server. Earlier versions of the concurrent license server are not supported.
  • QuickTest Professional Essentials does not support Windows user names with non-English letters. If you log in to Windows using a user name (with administrative privileges) that contains non-English characters and then install QuickTest Professional Essentials, the installation may complete successfully, but you may not be able to open QuickTest Professional Essentials, or it may not behave correctly.
  • The path in which installation files for QuickTest Professional Essentials are located, and the path in which QuickTest Professional Essentials is installed, can contain only English characters.
  • If you want to work with .NET 4.0, it is best to install it before you install QuickTest Professional Essentials. If you install .NET 4.0 after you install QuickTest Professional Essentials, you must manually register two .NET DLLs as follows:
  • In <QuickTest Professional Essentials installation folder>\GlobalAssemblyCache\Net4, execute the following commands:

    • ..\..\bin\GACRegUtil4x86.exe -i Mercury.QTP.Agent.dll
    • ..\..\bin\GACRegUtil4x86.exe -i Mercury.QTP.WpfAgent.dll
  • In Windows XP and Windows 2003, if you install the Oracle Add-in, the Windows Remote Shell Service (rshsvc.exe) may fail and display an error message every time you restart the computer. This occurs only if the Remote Shell Service is configured to run automatically.
  • If you install QuickTest Professional Essentials after installing HP Sprinter, objects from the following add-ins are recognized by QuickTest Professional Essentials as WinObjects:
    • .NET
    • WPF
    • Silverlight

Using the Documentation

This section lists documentation-specific troubleshooting information.

Additional troubleshooting information, guidelines, and feature-specific limitations are described in the relevant locations of the installation and product documentation. Make sure you are aware of those issues when working with the relevant features.

  • The QuickTest Help Index tab contains only reference items, such as objects, methods, properties, and functions. It does not contain any entries from the user guides.
  • To search for information from all the documents in the QuickTest Documentation Library, use the Search tab.

  • On some operating systems or after installing certain Windows service packs or updates, you may not be able to view the content of some Help files.
  • Workaround:

    1. Right-click the CHM file in <QuickTest Professional Essentials installation folder>\help, and click Properties.
    2. In the dialog box that opens, click Unblock.
