What's New in This Release?

• HP Data Protector Notebook Extension is renamed to HP Data Protector for PCs.

• In addition to CIFS-based (Windows file-share) Data Vaults, it is now possible to create and use Web Data Vaults that use HTTPS protocol. Web Data Vaults reduces the impact of network latency on data transfer between Agent and Data Vault resulting in shorter initial updates.

  CIFS-based Data Vaults are still supported, and can be migrated to Web Data Vaults.

  To manage the Web Data Vaults, a new software component, HP Data Protector for PCs Data Vault Server, is installed on a separate system from the Policy Server. The component is responsible for receiving client files via HTTPS protocol and storing them.

• IPv6 addresses can now be provided when configuring a Data Vault.
• Message IDs are now available in all Information, Warning and Error messages in the Agent log.
• Data Vaults can now be cleaned up by multiple CPU threads in order to handle more data and shorten cleanup time. This in turn, allows more data per user and more users per Data Vault.
• End users can optionally specify upper bounds for the amount of bandwidth that HP Data Protector for PCs is allowed to use. They can specify different bounds for work hours and non-work hours.

Installation Notes

Installing HP Data Protector for PCs for the first time

1. Install HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server software on a single server.
2. If you want to make use of Web Data Vaults (recommended option), install and configure a Web Data Vault Server on a different system from the Policy Server.
3. Do a brief configuration of protection policies using the Policy Server Console.
4. Install HP Data Protector for PCs Agent software on each desktop and laptop that you want protected.

Updating HP Data Protector for PCs from previous versions

An existing HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Policy Server installation can be updated to a HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server by executing the standard installation procedure.

All existing configurations will be available in the newer version (such as the Data Vault configuration, Licensing, and so on). Existing HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Agents must be updated and rebooted before they can use all the new features.

Update Procedure

1. Insert the HP Data Protector for PCs installation CD-ROM. If the installation wizard does not start automatically, run it manually by double-clicking setup.hta at the root of the installation CD-ROM.
2. Click Install Policy Server on the Install Data Protector for PCs page of the wizard to begin the upgrade.
3. Follow the instructions on-screen.
4. The installation procedure will detect an existing Policy Server installation and offer an update.
5. Follow the instructions on-screen.
6. When the installation finishes, click Next. You can then choose to run the Policy Server Console.

Note: If Cleanup Software is also installed on the Policy Server, this needs to be updated as well. This can be done either manually or also by using the Agent Update Policy.

Evaluating HP Data Protector for PCs

You can evaluate HP Data Protector for PCs free for 60 days. You have the full functionality of HP Data Protector for PCs during the evaluation period.

Software and Hardware Requirements

Note: For the most up-to-date information, see the Support Matrix section below.

Before installing HP Data Protector for PCs, make sure that your system meets the following minimum requirements.

HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server

• Operating Systems
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 32-bit and 64-bit and 2008 R2 in 64-bit mode
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (SP 1 or higher)
• Processing Environment
• Physical: 32-bit processor, x86 64-bit processor (only supported with IIS (Internet Information Server) versions 6.0, 7.0 and 7.5 running in 32-bit compatibility mode)
• Virtual: Hyper-V guest, VMware guest
• Memory
• Required: 128 MB RAM required above operating system and application requirements.
• Recommended: 256 MB RAM (or more for better performance) above operating system and application requirements.
• Disk space
• 250 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation).
• The HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server database requires additional space. We recommend a minimum of 100 MB plus 4 MB for each protected user computer.
• Software  (if these are not installed, the installation package offers the opportunity to install them)
• Internet Information Services 6.0, 7.0, 7.5 or later with support for ASP.NET applications
  Note: For Windows 2003, IIS 6.0 is a prerequisite and must be installed before the Policy Server can be installed. For Windows 2008, Notebook Extension offers installation of IIS 7.0 and 7.5, if they are not already installed.

• 250 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation).
• The HP Data Protector for PCs Data Vault Server requires additional space for client files. For more information see Installation Guide.
• Software  

• Java Run Time Environment 1.6 or higher

HP Data Protector for PCs Agent

• Operating systems
• Microsoft Windows 7, 32-bit and 64-bit
• Microsoft Windows Vista (SP1 or higher), 32-bit and 64-bit
• Microsoft Windows XP (SP2 or higher), 32-bit and 64-bit
• Memory
• Recommended: 64 MB RAM above operating system and application requirements.
• Disk space
• 15 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation).
• The Local Repository requires additional space on the system disk. Its size depends on the editing activity of the user and whether Open File Protection is used to protect files such as Outlook Personal Folders. A typical user will require approximately the following hard disk space for their local repository:
• 100 MB for Continuous File Protection
• 500 MB for Open File Protection (used temporarily)
• Antivirus software: HP Data Protector for PCs has been certified to work with the following Antivirus software:
• Symantec Antivirus
• McAfee Antivirus
• The HP Data Protector for PCs Agent may work with other Antivirus scanners, but these have not been tested

Enhancements and Fixes

• CIFS-based (Windows file-share) Data Vaults are replaced by Web Data Vaults using HTTPS protocol, which provide more secure communication between Agents and Data Vaults. CIFS-based Data Vaults are still supported, and can be migrated to Web Data Vaults.
• IPv6 addresses can now be provided when configuring a Data Vault.
• Message IDs are now available in all Information, Warning and Error messages in the Agent log.

  To manage the Web Data Vaults, a new software component, HP Data Protector for PCs Data Vault Server, is installed on a separate system from the Policy Server. The component is responsible for receiving files via HTTPS protocol and storing them.

Known Problems, Limitations, and Workarounds

• Executing the Agent Deployment Kit on a Vista or Windows 7 PC with UAC (User Account Control) enabled does not work.
  To fix this, disable UAC or install the Agent interactively.
• Installation on Windows 2003 64-bit operating system: The HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server runs in 32-bit compatibility mode on a 64-bit Windows operating system. This means that Internet Information Services (IIS) must be running in 32-bit mode. If it is not, the installation will detect this while checking the prerequisites. It will then give you the option of setting IIS into 32-bit mode. If there are other web applications on the server that require IIS to be in 64-bit mode (such as Microsoft Exchange 2007 with Web mail—Outlook Web Access), you will not be able to install the Policy Server on that server. This does not apply to installing a Policy Server on Windows 2008.

• Installation with Microsoft SharePoint: When the HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server is installed on a server running Microsoft SharePoint, you may get a 404 error "The page cannot be found" when you run the Policy Server Console. The Microsoft knowledge base article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828810 describes the issue and the resolution. Note that this issue applies to all ASP.NET Web applications, not just HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server.

  For the HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server to run on a server using SharePoint, you will need to do the following:

  1. Use the SharePoint administration tools to create exclusions for the two HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server Web applications: dpnepolicy and dpnepolicyservice.
  2. Modify the two HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server web.config files (dpnepolicy\web.config and dpnepolicyservice\web.config) to add the <httpHandlers> and <trust> XML code as described in the Microsoft knowledge base article referenced above.

• Browser settings for Policy Server Console: If you have problems displaying the Policy Server Console pages in your browser, please check the browser security settings. The Policy Server Console requires the following:

  • JavaScript must be enabled.
  • The popup blocker must be disabled for the dpnepolicy Web site.
  • Other restrictive security settings may need to be modified depending on your particular browser and its version.
• Associating Active Directory Groups with Data Vaults: You can associate Data Vaults with Active Directory groups in the Data Vault Policy. All members of the associated groups will back up to the associated Data Vault. You cannot associate individual users. Further, if you associate an Organization Unit (OU), only the groups within that OU are associated. Any users that are directly in the OU are not associated with the Data Vault. The list of Active Directory groups may incorrectly include groups other than security groups, such as distribution groups. However, only security groups will actually be associated with the Data Vault.
• HP Data Protector for PCs does not support the backup of EFS-encrypted files with Open File Protection policies.
• Policy Server on a UAC (User Account Control) enabled system: If the HP Data Protector for PCs Policy Server is installed on a UAC-enabled system, when you start the Policy Server Console using the link in the Start Menu, an error message is displayed: either  “You are not authorized to access (…)”  or “Error building navigation tree”.

  In order to avoid this issue, you need to start the Policy Server Console with administrative privileges:

  1. In the start menu, right-click on the Internet Explorer  icon and select Run as administrator.
  2. Navigate manually to http://localhost/dpnepolicy.

  If UAC is enabled, you cannot access the Policy Server Console remotely.

  Note: Immediately after installation, the Policy Server Console window will appear without an error, because the installation runs in administrative mode.

• Windows File Share Data Vault on a UAC-enabled system: A Windows File Share Data Vault cannot be configured on a UAC-enabled system from the Policy Server Console. An error message appears: “Failed to create Data Vault Share. (…)”

  To avoid this, turn off UAC until the Data Vault is configured.
