Installation Notes

 

Installing HP Data Protector Notebook Extension for the first time

 

1.     Install HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Policy Server software on a single server.

2.     Do a brief configuration of protection policies using the Policy Server Console.

3.     Install HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Agent software on each desktop and laptop that you want protected.

Full installation requirements, as well as instructions for installing Data Protector Notebook Extension, are documented in the Installation and administration guide provided in PDF (.pdf) format. You can find the guide on the product installation media at this location:

Updating Data Protector Notebook Extension from previous versions

Not applicable.

Evaluating Data Protector Notebook Extension

You can evaluate Data Protector Notebook Extension free of charge for 60 days. You have the full functionality of Data Protector Notebook Extension during the evaluation period.

Software and Hardware Requirements

Before installing Data Protector Notebook Extension, make sure that your system meets the following minimum requirements.

Notes:

·         In order to run Data Protector Notebook Extension, HP Data Protector must be installed on the network, so that Data Protector Notebook Extension can contact the Cell Manager.

·         In the following, “Windows Server 2003” includes Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. Windows operating systems include support for all available editions.

HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Policy Server

·         Operating Systems

§  Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (SP 1 or higher)

·         Processing Environment

§  Physical: 32-bit processor, x86 64-bit processor (only supported with IIS (Internet Information Server) versions 5.0 and 6.0 running in 32-bit compatibility mode)

§  Virtual: Hyper-V guest, VMware guest

·         Memory

§  Required: 128 MB RAM required above operating system and application requirements.

§  Recommended: 256 MB RAM (or more for better performance) above operating system and application requirements.

·         Disk space

§  250 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation).

§  The HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Policy Server database requires additional space. We recommend a minimum of 100 MB plus 4 MB for each protected user computer.

·         Internet browser

§  Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher

§  Mozilla Firefox 3.0 and higher

§  Other browsers may work, but have not been tested

·         Microsoft SQL 2005 Express (embedded)
Operating Systems:

§  Windows 2003 (SP 1 or higher) 32-bit

·         Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Operating Systems:

§  Any platform supported by the Policy Server when locally installed

§  Any platform supported by Microsoft SQL Server 2005 when installed remotely

·         Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Operating Systems:

§  Any platform supported by the Policy Server when locally installed

§  Any platform supported by Microsoft SQL Server 2008 when installed remotely

HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Agent

·         Operating systems

§  Microsoft Windows 7, 32-bit

§  Microsoft Windows Vista (SP1 or higher), 32-bit

§  Microsoft Windows XP (SP2 or higher), 32-bit

·         Memory

§  Recommended: 64 MB RAM above operating system and application requirements.

·         Disk space

§  15 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation).

§  The Local Repository requires additional space on the system disk. Its size depends on the editing activity of the user and whether Open File Protection is used to protect files such as Outlook Personal Folders. A typical user will require approximately the following hard disk space for their local repository:

o    100 MB for Continuous File Protection

§  500 MB for Open File Protection (used temporarily)

·         Antivirus software - Data Protector Notebook Extension has been certified to work with the following Antivirus software:

§  Symantec Antivirus

§  McAfee Antivirus

§  The HP Data Protector Notebook Extension Agent may work with other Antivirus scanners, but these have not been tested

Known Problems, Limitations, and Workarounds

 

Executing the Agent Deployment Kit on a Vista PC with UAC (User Account Control) enabled does not work.

To fix this, disable UAC or install the Agent interactively.
