Environment

This article discusses information regarding the following error message that may appear when attempting to perform a conversion.

ERROR: Two or more volumes have the same serial number. Change the serial numbers so that they are unique and rediscover the machine.

Applies to:  PowerConvert 6.8 and above


Situation

When attempting to convert a server, the following error is displayed:

 This error can occur when performing a P2X or V2X of a Windows server if the volume IDs are identical.

Resolution

Solution 1: Change the Volume ID of one of the Drives

Step 1: On the source server download and unpack VolumeID from the TechNet website.

Step 2: From the command prompt, change the Volume ID of the higher drive letter. (refrain from changing the system drive)

VolumeID.exe DriveLetter: XXXX-XXXX

Where XXXX-XXXX is a unique hexadecimal number (valid characters are from 0 - F)

Step 3: Reboot the source server and refresh server details on the source from the PowerConvert server.

* Please note that this tool is provided as is by Microsoft and can cause damage to the drive if used improperly. It may be best to take a back up of the data on the drive prior to changing the volume ID.

Solution 2: Modifying the source server’s XML file

If one of the drives that has the same volume ID is not needed, the xml file can be modified to exclude that particular volume.

Step 1: In PowerConvert right click on the source server and click on export. Save the xml file to the desktop.

Step 2: Open the xml file in notepad and look for the volume ID entries.

Step 3: Remove the volume section that is not necessary for the conversion and save the file.

Step 4: In PowerConvert, select File and Import Machines. Open the newly modified xml file and click Open. When prompted, to update the existing machine click yes.

Again, this will remove one of the drives from the source in PowerConvert and will correct the error. This will not affect your source server.
