PowerRecon Installation Fails to Launch the Setup.exe Application

This article discusses an issue which may occur when trying to install PowerRecon 3.1 and above. During the installation process of PowerRecon the installer will extract the installation files to a temporary location on the target system. After the extraction completes the installer fails to launch the setup application and no error messages are displayed.

During the installation process for PowerRecon 3.1 the installer extracts the installation files to a temporary location on the target system. After the files are extracted the installation process calls the Microsoft HTML Application host (MSHTA) to launch the setup of PowerRecon. If the Microsoft HTML Application Host process was running prior to the launch of the PowerRecon installer the PowerRecon installation process will fail to launch the setup.exe.

To resolve this issue please try one of the solutions listed below.

1.       Stop the mshta.exe process through task manager prior to launching the PowerRecon installation.

2.       Manually launch the setup.exe application from the location where the installation files were extracted to.
