Environment

PlateSpin Migrate

Situation

The following article discusses the post conversion issue of Windows NT4 chkdsk command will not run after P2V migration and the following error message will be displayed on the VM when trying to run chkdsk in dos prompt:

This NTFS volume was created or modified by a later version of Windows NT. This version of chkdsk cannot be run on this volume. You must boot the version of NT that created/modified this volume and run chkdsk from that installation.

Resolution

This issue occurs when a Windows NT NTFS file system was upgraded to the latest NTFS file system and chkdsk will stop functioning due to the added features in NTFS 3.0 and higher. When PowerConvert takes control of an NT server and loads PlateSpin Take Control Image, the OS will upgrade the NTFS file permissions and chkdsk will stop functioning on the VM after the conversion (Similar behavior will occur when Windows NT system resides on a same server with latest Operating systems (Dual Boot) such as Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows 2003).
