Access Denied error during Take Control of Source Machine with IBM Rescue and Recovery Installed

Situation

When attempting to convert a source machine, the conversion fails during the Take Control of Source Machine stage of the conversion with an Access Denied error:


NOTE:  The above step number may vary depending on which version of PowerConvert you are running

Resolution

The above error may occur if the Source Machine has IBM Rescue and Recovery installed and the “Use Windows (or client Security Passphrase - depending on the login method being used) to protect access to the Rescue and Recovery Workspace” option is enabled.  Uninstalling IBM Rescue and Recovery or disabling this feature will resolve this problem and prevent it from occurring.

To disable this feature, the following steps are required:

  1. Click on Start -> Programs -> ThinkVantage -> Client Security Solution
  2. Click on Advanced in the top left corner.  A new window should appear
  3. Click on the Set Security and Backup Preferences button
  4. Choose the Standard security configuration method and click Next.  You will receive a prompt asking if you are sure ( Verify with your hardware support before answering Yes to this prompt as re-running the wizard will overwrite all previous settings and  will erase any backups created with an encrypted key )
  5. On the next screen select the appropriate Login method
  6. Depending on which login method is selected in the next screen or two, you may see the option “Use Windows password (or Client Security Passphrase - if this login method was selected) to protect access to the Rescue and Recovery Workspace” .  Make sure that this option is unchecked
  7. Proceed with the rest of the Wizard
  8. Reboot the Source machine
  9. Refresh the Server Details of the Source Machine
  10. Restart the conversion
