Overview

This article discusses a known issue when performing a V2V conversion from VMware GSX/ESX Server to a Microsoft Virtual Server target or vice-versa.

Applies to:  PowerConvert 5.0 and higher

Details

When performing a Virtual to Virtual conversion using a Virtual Machine from a VMware GSX or ESX Server as the source machine to a Microsoft Virtual Server as the target virtual server, the conversion job fails during the "Configuring Operating System" step with the following error:

Failed to restore Virtual Machine settings

This error will appear if the source Virtual Machine has VMware Tools/VM Additions installed.

As a best practice policy, PlateSpin recommends that VMware Tools/VM Additions be uninstalled from the source Virtual Machine before proceeding with a V2V conversion to a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 host.
