Overview

This article gives an overview of changes that are made to a Windows operating system as part of a PowerP2V conversion.

Details

Source Machine

  • Boot.ini: the boot.ini file is edited to include an entry for the PlateSpin boot image.  This file is then restored so the original source OS will be the default in the boot.ini file.
  • C:\P2VTemp: During take control PowerP2V copies the PlateSpin boot image to C:\P2VTemp (assuming "C:" is the first mounted bootable partition).
  • C:\NTLDR.platespin.take.control.bak :   Backup of the source server's NTLDR
  • C:\PlateSpin Disk Signature Backup.ini:  Backup of the source server's Disk Signature
  • C:\MountManager.exe and DiskSignature.exe Used to ensure that the drive mappings are propagated correctly to the target virtual machine

Target Machine

  • Driver files: Depending on the target virtual machine server, different network and/or SCSI drivers are added to the OS.  This includes adding ".sys" files and registry entries for the specific drivers needed.
  • HAL and Kernel: HAL and Kernels only replaced when necessary. This would include changing from an ACPI source to a non ACPI target or changing from a single CPU processor to SMP.
  • Files that are not copied:
    • Swap file
    • Any file with no security descriptors
    • NTFS Sparse Files
  • MSI upgrade: To install VMware Tools or Virtual Server Additions PowerP2V will upgrade to MSI 2.0.  This will happen only when converting a Windows NT SP4 server.
