Installation hang or failure under x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x based systems

  • 14-May-2012

Environment

  • NetIQ UNIX Agent 7.1
  • RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.x, x86_64
  • CentOS 6.x, x86_64
  • Oracle Linux 6.x, x86_64

Situation

On x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x based systems, the NetIQ UNIX Agent 7.1 installation can fail if 32-bit compatibility libraries are missing.

Running UNIX Agent binaries directly will result in a "bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory" error.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, simply install the 32-bit compatibility libraries prior to running / installing the UNIX Agent:

Through yum/the RedHat Network:

yum install redhat-lsb.i686

From the installation CD:

rpm -i <RHELCD>/Packages/redhat-lsb.*.i686.rpm

Cause

To reduce the size of the UNIX Agent download, we utilize the 32-bit Linux Agent on 64-bit (x86_64, Not Itanium) Linux systems.

RedHat Enterprise Linux in the past has always provided 32-bit compatibility libraries when a 64-bit (x86_64) installation was performed, however in 6.x the 32-bit compatibility libraries may or may not be present depending on your system configuration.
