Why Install This Version?

NetIQ Group Policy Administrator (GPA) is an enterprise-wide, Group Policy change control solution that helps you quickly take advantage of the powerful features Group Policy technology offers. Much more than just a replacement for other tools, GPA helps you easily implement Group Policy technology and easily manage GPOs. This release of GPA offers the following improvements:

Enables Installing All GPA Components on Microsoft Windows Server 2008, x86 and x64
This version adds the ability to install the GPA Server and GP Repository on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x86 and x64, including Service Packs 1 and 2. The previous version supported Microsoft Windows Server 2008 on only the GPA Console.

Supports Managing GPOs for Microsoft Windows Server 2008
This version supports managing GPOs for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2. The previous version added support for only Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

Supports Managing GPOs for Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
This version supports managing GPOs for Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.

Supports Editing Comments
This version enables you to edit and report on the following types of comments for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or 2:

Comments at the GPO level. (ENG187652)
Comments at the settings level. Settings level comments are available only for settings in Administrative Templates.

Supports Editing Group Policy Preferences
This version enables you to import, edit, export, and report on preferences included with Microsoft Windows Group Policy Preference extensions available with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or 2.

Supports Migrating Group Policy Preferences
This version supports migrating preferences as part of the process to migrate GPOs.

Supports Renaming GPO During Migration
This version adds support for renaming a GPO during migration. To enable a GPO name change to be reflected in the target domain, enable the Update GPO Name option in the GP Repository properties before you migrate the GPO. For more information, see the User Guide. (ENG264669)

Supports Grooming the GPA Database
This version allows you to groom the GPA database. For more information, see the User Guide. (ENG177067)

Supports IPv6
This version supports installing GPA components in a pure Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) environment. GPA does not support a dual stack (IPv6/IPv4) environment. (ENG241025)

Supports Microsoft SQL Server Version 2008
This version supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise Edition on the GP Repository computer.

However, this version does not support upgrading the GPA Console or GPA Server on a computer that has Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Also, the GPA Console cannot coexist on a computer that has Microsoft SQL Server 2008. For more information about upgrading GPA if you want to use Microsoft SQL Server 2008, see Upgrading GPA on Microsoft SQL Server 2008. (ENG262197, ENG274722)

Supports WMI Filter Maps for Migration
This version allows you to create WMI filter maps during migration. If the WMI filter exists in the target domain where you plan to migrate the GPO, GPA links the WMI filter to the GPO upon migration.

Supports Japanese Versions of Microsoft Windows
This version supports reports for the Japanese version of Microsoft Windows.

Supports Remote Database Installation
This version adds support for installing the GP Repository on a remote computer or a cluster. (ENG238986, ENG258573)

Meets the FIPS 140 Inside Program and FIPS 180-3
This version uses FIPS 140-2 certified algorithms, and thus complies with the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140 Inside program as described in the FIPS 140 FAQ. This version also complies with FIPS 180-3. You must enable the FIPS policy after upgrading to this version of Group Policy Administrator to be in compliance with the FIPS 140 Inside program. For more information about how Group Policy Administrator claims compliance, see the Legal Notice.

Supports Adding Comments with the Approve or Export Scripting Methods
This version allows you to add a comment to the GPO history when approving, unapproving, or exporting a GPO by using scripts. For more information, see the User Guide. (ENG260054)

Removes Group Policy Guardian Reports
The NetIQ Group Policy Guardian (GPG) product is End of Life. Therefore, this version of GPA removes the integration with GPG. NetIQ is replacing GPG with the NetIQ Change Guardian for Group Policy product and an integration with GPA is being considered. (DOC269795)
