CIM_FanSummary knowledge script aborts and generates event: 'Getting status for system fan is not supported'

CIM_FanSummary knowledge script generates error: Getting status for fan is not supported

Following execution of Discovery_CIM knowlege script, no distinct Fan objects appear beneath the Fan folder object under CIM, in the AppManager Operator Console.

Fan objects do NOT appear in the HP System Management Console.

Resolution

Hewlett Packard has determined that a problem in the firmware for certain Proliant models prevents the fans from being monitored.  An updated firmware and driver version is available from HP.

For the DL360 G4,  Firmware Release CP006554.exe, Dated 2006-02-14, Released 05-14-2006, will resolve the problem.  The documentation included with this release explicitly describes the Missing Fan Issue as being fixed.

For all other models install whatever Firmware is specific to that Model from the Firmware Maintenance CD 7.60 Release. It is available on HP.com,and was released on or about 9-27-06.

Fan monitoring is not supported on all HP/Compaq server models.  The model  DLT 8500, for example, does not specifically support fan monitoring via AppManager - see NETIQKB5529.  To verify fan support, check the available CIM agents in "Compaq Management Agents for Servers" or your HP/Compaq Proliant server documentation, or contact Hewlett Packard.

Cause

The CIM_FanSummary knowledge script reads the value of the following MIB OID's to determine the status of the fans.

System Fan Status = ".1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.2.6.4.0"
CPU Fan Status = ".1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.2.6.5.0"

If either one of these return a value of "1", the system is stating that the fan is not supported.
