While it is not possible to add additional attributes to search on in DRA, this can be done with DRA 8.1 and later through the use of Advanced (LDAP) Queries.  Create a query to search for the 'department' attribute field.

An Enhancement Request has been opened with Development to include this functionality in a future version of Directory and Resource Administrator.
