Environment

NetIQ AppManager 6.x
NetIQ AppManager 7.0.x

Situation

Unable to install Microsoft Exchange service pack on an Exchange server where an AppManager Agent is installed.
Error: 'The file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\CDO\cdoex.dll is in use by another application. Setup could not determine which application(s) or service(s) is using this file, and cannot continue.'

Resolution

To stop AppManager Agent services required for installing the Exchange service pack:

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Enter services.msc and click OK.
  3. Stop all the following services that exist:

    • NetIQ AppManager Client Communication Manager
    • NetIQ AppManager Client Resource Monitor
    • qexch2k*a 
    • any other service that starts with qexch

  4. Install the Microsoft Exchange service pack.
  5. Restart the services that you previously stopped.

Cause

AppManager for Exchange uses Collaboration Data Objects, but the Exchange service pack upgrades pack the CDO.dll. The upgrade will fail if the service is in use.
