Resolution

goal
Does Group Policy Administrator (GPA) support Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition?

fact
NetIQ Group Policy Administrator 5.0

symptom
Error:"To complete this installation, you must be a member of the SQL Server sysadmin role."

symptom
"To complete this installation you must be a member of the SQL Server Sysadmin role.  Please add your user account to the Sysadmin role and then continue with the installation.  Alternatively, log on to this computer with a user account that is a member of the Sysadmin role to perform the installation."

symptom
Error installing the GPA console on Windows XP workstation with SQL 2005 Express installed.

cause
The GPA Console supports only default instances of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. However, the standard installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installs a named instance of SQL Server, not a default instance. If you have a named instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, you must install another, default instance to successfully install the GPA Console.
