Environment

AppManager 6.x
AppManager 7.0.x
Performance Endpoint 5.x

Situation

Installation of Networks-RT fails on Windows 2003 SP1 or Windows XP SP2.
Cannot run 16-bit Windows program.
Cannot find file C:\DOCUME~1\..\endpoint_0\setup.exe.
Error: 'NTVDM Encountered a hard error.'

Resolution

To verifythe following registry keys on the agent:

  1. On the agent computer, click Start> Run.
  2. Enter Regedit.
  3. Navigate to the following registry keys:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\AppCompat]
    "VDMDisallowed"=dword:00000001
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WOW]
    "DisallowedPolicyDefault"=dword:00000001

    A value of '1' enables the security feature prevents the endpoint installer from running. Disable these features by changing the registry key value to '0' (decimal).
  4. Click Start> Run
  5. Enter CMD.
  6. Enter gpupate to update the computer policy.
  7. Enter Setup.exe.
  8. If this does not resolve the issue, check if your group policies are pushed out at the domain level.

Cause

Since releasing Windows 2003 SP1, Microsoft Corporation has provided administrators additional security using Group Policies. New settings prevent NTVDM from launching 16-bit applications. The installer for Endpoint uses a 16bit version of InstallShield.
