Resolution

fact
NetIQ Vulnerability Manager 5.5

symptom
Error: 'Error in retrieving start menu folder location.  Unspecified error.'

symptom
Error: 'Install failed. Incorrect function.'

symptom
An error occurs when remotely deploying an agent.

cause
When deploying the agent , the account you used under deployment Credentials lacked sufficient access rights to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu folder.

fix

The problem of not having access to part or all of the computer where you want to install the agent has many potential causes.  Two possible causes are that a GPO restricts access to the computer or that someone manually reconfigured ACLs to eliminate the required permissions to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu folder on the computer.  The cause might also be something else. Whatever the cause of the access problem, resolving it should make successful agent installation possible.

To ensure the installing account has the necessary Deployment Credentials:

  1. Ensure the account you use under the Deployment Credentials section of the Deployment Wizard is a member of the local Administrators group on the computer where you are installing the agent.
  2. Reattempt to install the agent.

If you performed this procedure and still are unable to install the agent, contact NetIQ Technical Support.
