Environment
NetIQ AppManager 7.0.x
Situation
Error: 'RPC server initialization failed with 1740.
Error: 'MC_5 Port 9998 available. Port is being used by NetiqMS or other applications. Failed.'
Resolution
To verify that the port is currently in use:
- Open the serverName_results.htm file located by default in the \Program Files\NetIQ\temp\netiq_debug\serverName folder on the Managed Client experiencing this issue. This is the prerequisite check executed during agent install and may display the error that the Port is being used by NetiqMS or other applications.
- Ensure the NetIQ Client Resource Monitor Service (NetIQmc) is not currently running.
- Ensure the netiqmc.exe process does not appear in Task Manager.
- Run the NETSTAT -a command to verify if port 9998 is currently listed as Listening.
If you receive the "listening" reply, then some other application is currently using that port.
To find what application is using that port, disable non-standard Windows services on the computer one at a time. Run the NETSTAT command after each service is stopped to verify if port 9998 is still in use. If you determine that the application that is currently using port 9998 must continue to use that port, change the port that the NetIQ AppManager Management Service (MS) and NetIQmc use for communication. However, changing this value will affect ALL clients connected to that particular Managed Server.
