Failed to create an instance of the PasswordMigration object, hr=0x80040154.

cause

The DMA installer failed to register the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\MsPwdMig.dll file.

The %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\MsPwdMig.dll file failed to register during installation of Domain Migration Administrator.



fix

Manually register the MsPwdMig.dll file.

To manually register the MsPwdMig.dll file:

  1. Close the DMA console.
  2. Run the following command from a command prompt in the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 folder: regsvr32 MsPwdMig.dll
  3. Run DMA and create the Password Encryption key.
