Environment

NetIQ Analysis Center 2.x

Situation

Error: The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

Installation fails for Data Mart on a server not part of a Windows Domain

Resolution

The required ETL SQL job resides on the DataWarehouse and when the console tries to get the status of the SQL job, a Distributed Transaction Call will be made.  Since this transaction is done via MSDTC, the transaction may fail due to lack of authentication for the DTC.

To complete the installation and verify communication among the Analysis Center components:

  1. Ensure MSDTC is enabled on both the DataMart server and Data Warehouse server. Note: To enable MSDTC, you may have to reboot the computers.
  2. Follow the directions within the following Microsoft KB: MSDTC fails to mutually authenticate when computers do not run in the same domain.
  3. Launch the Analysis Console to ensure all components are enabled and that AC reports the ETL and OLAP jobs are successful.

Cause

The Microsoft DTC Network Access (MSDTC) proxy may not correctly authenticate MSDTC when the communicating computers are not members of the same domain. For mor information, see the linked Microsoft Article in the FIX statement.
