symptom
Error - Opening MAPI Public Folder stores for Public Folder migration [OrgName][HR=0x80004005]

symptom
I get a MAPI error when trying to migrate Public Folders.

symptom
Error - Opening the Public Folder information store

cause

The Exchange Migrator console machine has an incorrect version of the Mapi32.dll file in the \system32 folder. Ensure you have the correct version of this file, based on the version of Exchange running on the target server.

When the target Exchange server is running:

  • Exchange 5.5, use version 5.5x of the Mapi32.dll file
  • Exchange 2000 or later, use version 6.x of the Mapi32.dll file

fix

Resolve this issue by copying the correct version of the Mapi32.dll file to the \system32 folder on the Exchange Migrator console computer.

If your target server is running Exchange 5.5:

  1. On the Exchange Migrator (EM) console computer, close the console.
  2. Copy the Mapi32.dll file from the installation media (for the latest Exchange 5.5 service pack that was applied to the target Exchange server) to the %systemroot%\system32 folder on the EM console computer.
  3. Apply the corresponding Exchange 5.5 service pack to the Exchange Migrator console computer to ensure the Exchange Administrator tool is also using the correct Mapi32.dll file.
  4. Start the EM console.
  5. Re-migrate the Public Folders.

If your target server is running Exchange 2000 or later:

  1. On the Exchange Migrator (EM) console computer, close the console.
  2. Right-click the Mapi32.dll file in the \Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin folder.
  3. On the Version tab, verify the version is 6.x (for an Exchange 2000 or later target server).
  4. Copy the Mapi32.dll file to the %systemroot%\system32 folder on the EM console computer.
  5. Start the EM console.
  6. Re-migrate the Public Folders.
