Attempt to install Hofix generates error: 'NetIQ Group Policy Administrator is not installed in the directory, C:\  Please select a valid destination directory'

symptom
When attempting to install a hotfix to a GPA console system that has been upgraded from a previous version, the following error is received: 'NetIQ Group Policy Administrator is not installed in the directory, C:\  Please select a valid destination directory'. The only option is to click OK.  There is no option to change the installation directory. After clicking OK, the same screen displays and you are unable to continue with the hotfix installation.

cause

The installer looks at a registry key to locate the installatiion directory for the product. On an upgraded console, it is set to "C:\" instead of the directory where the product is actually installed. The hotfix is failing because it is unable to locate the product files in this path to verify that the product has been installed.  

fix

To resolve this issue:

1. Open Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NetIQ\GPA.
3. Select the key InstallDir in the right pane.
4. Change the value to be the installation directory of GPA 4.X, which is by default: C:\Program Files\NetIQ\Group Policy Administrator 4.X.
5. Run the hotfix installation.
