Some AppManager for SQL Server Knowledge Scripts generate a failed to find counter event. (NETIQKB44238)

NetIQ AppManager 7.0.x
Microsoft SQL Server 2000

Situation

Some AppManager for SQL Server Knowledge Scripts generate a 'Failed counter' event but ran successfully in the past
Knowledge Script has successfully executed in the past fail when:
Monitoring a SQL Server cluster where a fail over has occurred.
Monitoring a SQL Server instance where the instance has restarted.
The error log for the SQL Server instance has the following error message:
Performance monitor shared memory setup failed: -1

Resolution

In order to fix this problem, please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (812915) which documents the problem and provides a fix for the issue.

A workaround is to restart the computer being monitored.

Cause

This problem is a result of a known issue with Microsoft SQL Server 2000. When an application such as NetIQ AppManager is actively using the SQL Server performance counters and that SQL Server instance is restarted; the SQL Server instance fails to reload the performance counters in some cases.
