Error: 'Unable to read gp files from the database' received when trying to check out a Group Policy Object (GPO) from the Repository.

symptom
I am receiving the message Error: 'Unable to read gp files from the database' when trying to check out a Group POlicy Object(GPO).

cause
The user does not have permissions to the local GPO share point on the machine.

fix

To confirm this in GPA 4.x do the following:

  1. Go to Start | Run.
  2. Enter "\\MachineName\Local_Gpos" and click OK.
  3. Go to File | New Folder.

If you receive 'Access Denied', verify the permission of the share LOCAL_GPOs and the NTFS permissions of the directory at ..\Program Files\NetIQ\Group Policy Administrator 4.x\local GPOs.

For GPA 5.0 Do the following:

  1. Go to Start | Run.
  2. Enter \\MachineName\GPOsManagedByGPA$ and click OK.
  3. Go to File | New Folder.

If you receive 'Access Denied', verify the permission of the share LOCAL_GPOs and the NTFS permissions of the directory at ..\Program Files\NetIQ\Group Policy Administrator\local GPOs.
