Resolution

fact
Domain Migration Administrator 7.x

symptom
Error: 'The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure. HR=8007214c'

cause

This error is generated in the Migration.log file when trying to migrate users IntraForest. This can be caused by various DNS issues. It is possible this same error message will appear in the target domain's event logs.

fix

To resolve this issue, troubleshoot the issue with the following steps:

  1. Verify that the DMA console is able to resolve the name of the Primary DNS server and the source domain using NSLOOKUP.
  2. NSLOOKUP sourceNetBiosDomainName

    • If you get an error resolving the local DNS server name, add a reverse lookup entry for the local DNS server
    • If this is successful and you were unable to resolve the source domain, you may need to set up forwarding between your source and target DNS servers
    • If this is successful and the source domain is able to be resolved, verify that you can perform an NSLOOKUP against the IP address that was returned for the source domain.

    NSLOOKUP ###.###.###.###

  3. If all of this is unsuccessful, verify the reverse lookup records for the source domain.
  4. Create a reverse lookup record on the DNS server for the DNS server itself.
