Resolution

fact
Directory and Resource Administrator 7.0 SP1

symptom
Error: 'An unhandled exception has occurred.  The exception type is System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException' when trying to create a User with a Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 mailbox.

cause

The issue can be caused by a Microsoft Exchange Server being located in an unusual container. DRA is expecting each Microsoft Exchangeserver to be in the normal location which is:

CN=<servername>,CN=Servers,CN=<admin group name>,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=<Org Name>,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com

However in unusual circumstances, an Exchange Server was located in the LostAndFound container.  Therefore the path to the Exchange server was:

 CN=servername,CN=Servers,CN=LostAndFoundConfig,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com

fix

This is corrected in DRA 7.5. To resolve this issue upgrade to the latest version of DRA.

Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) 7.5 will not throw an exception in the GUI but will build the drop down menu with the location of the Exchange server.  This will at least give an indication that there is something wrong when the path shows the path to the unusual container where the Microsoft Exchange Server is located.

To workaround this issue:

  1. Launch ADSIEdit with an account that has rights to the unusual container.
  2. Remove or move the Microsoft Exchange Server to the correct location.
