Error: 'Password Copy Extension extension returned a Failed result hr=0x800706ba'.

symptom
Password migration error is displayed in Migration.log file.

cause

When copying passwords from an Active Directory source domain, the Password Export Server (PES) actually exports the passwords directly to the target domain controller (DC) as specified in the Domain Migration Administrator (DMA) Migration.log.

This error appears in the Migration.log as a result of name resolution not functioning properly between the PES and the target DC. The name resolution issue can be caused by an invalid WINS entry on the WINS server being used by the source PES, or an incorrect LMHOSTS entry on the actual PES machine. 

fix

The following solutions should address this issue:

• Remove or correct the invalid entry in on the WINS server.
• Point the source PES to a WINS server that contains a correct record for the target DC.
• Add an LMHOSTS entry to the source PES for the target DC.
