NetIQ AppManager 6.x
NetIQ AppManager 7.0.x

Situation

What is the difference between the 'MS action' and the 'MC action' option for an action?

Resolution

Management Server (MS) and Managed Client (MC) actions denote where the action configured in the Knowledge Script is executed.  You have these two (of three) action locations for Agents to execute jobs.

  • MC Actions: When an Agent executes an MC job, the job executes locally on the agent.  A triggering event may occur, and the local Agent is able to launch the corresponding action - even if the Managed Server is not available.  In addition, some actions such as the SMTPMailRpt action requires the MC Action location and cannot be executed through the MS location.  SMTPMailRpt cannot be used on any machine but the Report Agent.

  • MS Actions: The Agent is required to forward the alert to the Management Server for execute.  MS actions require connectivity to the Management Server for proper job execution.  The Management Server Service then in turn has its own agent execute the action.
