symptom
Unable to create a mailbox for an account that has an existing SMTP e-mail address; the option to create the mailbox is grayed out.

fix

This is by design. Directory and Resource Administrator is following the native tools behavior by Microsoft, which does not allow this to be done.  Once a user account is assigned an SMTP e-mail address, a mailbox cannot be created for that user account.  To create a mailbox, you would first have to delete the current SMTP e-mail address for that user account.

This issue is resolved in Directory and Resource Administrator (DRA) 7.5 and later.  DRA now removes the SMTP address before creating the mailbox.  Upgrade to the latest version of DRA to resolve this problem.
