Resolution

goal
How do I migrate a Local Group (LG) from a member server and transform it into a Global Group (GG) for the same domain?

Domain Migration Administrator 7.x

fix

Domain Migration Administrator (DMA) cannot change the Local Group (LG) from a member server to a Global Group (GG) within the same domain.  DMA will migrate the LG from the member server to the domain, but it will remain a LG on the target Domain.  In addition, DMA can translate security on resources and replace the member server LG with the domain LG. DMA can however, map a local group to an existing global group of the same name.

For either of these options you can migrate the LG using the Group Migration Wizard.

  1. Specify  \\machine name as the source domain.
  2. You would not need to choose any of the options in the 'Group Options' window.
  3. If you have an existing group of the same name, you would select Replace and Update conflciting accounts in the 'Naming Conflicts' window.

After the migration, you can use the Translate Security Settings Wizard to replace the LGs with either the domain local group, or the mapped/merged Global Group.

note
If you are mapping to an existing group you can also use the Map and Merge wizard.
